She first met Kevin Kane, an attorney, in 1974, and the couple remained married until his passing in 2016. In 1973, Marta and her first husband finalised their divorce. Previously, she had worked in television and cinema. Because it needed less time away from home, Marta was able to focus on raising her baby while also appearing in over 40 television ads. Later on in the same year, Marta relocated to the United States, where she gave birth to her daughter Laura.

Marta had tried to find her roots offscreen, but it wasn’t until 1969 that she was successful. She also met her older sister for the first time, whom she didn’t know about until that point. It wasn’t until 1969, when Marta was pregnant with her first child and travelling alone through Europe looking for her long-lost relatives, that she was able to find her biological mother in Finland. In 1963, Marta had a chance encounter with a graduate student, and the couple went on to be married in 1964. He was the one who arranged for her to get an agent, and after that, she was quickly booked for appearances on television shows like Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955) and The Loretta Young Show (1953). Harris, a producer and director, was the one who came across the pretty and petite aspiring actress. After relocating to Los Angeles with her family in 1959, she first spent one year at Santa Monica High School before transferring to and graduating from Hollywood Professional School. Harold Soderquist of Detroit, Michigan, who had adopted her and given her the new name. Martha Soderquist was her new name when she was transported to the United States in 1949 by Dr. Marta had not yet reached her second month of life when she was abandoned at an orphanage.

Her mother was Finnish, and her father was a German soldier who was killed during the conclusion of World War II in Europe. Birgit Annalisa Rusanen, who would later become known as Marta Kristen, was born in Oslo, Norway, on February 26, 1945.
